Programme on development of TLM using indigenous games and toys |
The project “Development of Teaching-learning Materials by Incorporating Naga Indigenous Games, toys and Oral Storytelling” is an initiative by student-teachers at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Chiechama, Nagaland to learn to design and develop teaching learning materials using Indigenous methods of storytelling, toy making, and Indigenous games. Six Indigenous games and toys, maize dolls, and seven folktales are included in the project effort. This project is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which calls for the incorporation of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge in both school and higher education curriculum. Educators can help youngsters connect with their cultural history and build a feeling of pride and identity by employing indigenous games, toys, and folktales. Children are more likely to retain information and acquire crucial skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork when they participate in hands-on activities and play-based learning. The Project was undertaken with the following objectives: To design and develop teaching learning materials that incorporate indigenous games/toys and indigenous methods of storytelling. To improve student-teachers’ ability to organize events for indigenous games, indigenous toy making and storytelling to construct their own knowledge. To propagate indigenous traditional knowledge. The project was envisioned because indigenous games and folktales are a significant component of our people’s tradition and culture. The oral tradition of storytelling, on the other hand, had always been a part of our ancestors. This project was created to encourage student-teachers to create and incorporate indigenous games, toys, and folktales into their classroom instruction. The student-teachers documented all of the Indigenous games and folktales from their own cultural backgrounds, whilst the materials for the maize dolls were acquired and the toys were made at the institute. During the development of these materials, the trainees, who came from several Naga tribes, became familiar with and learnt about each tribe’s distinctiveness; the unique style of performing the various indigenous games; and the rich oral traditions of the various tribes. The project began in collaboration with the first year D.El.Ed course curriculum. Developing Teaching Learning Materials is one of the practicum work required in the first year of the D.El.Ed course’s curriculum. As a result, the project’s initial phase was to organise a one-day workshop on designing instructional and learning materials for first-year student teachers. Following the workshop, indigenous toys, games, and folktales were collected and documented. The second through fourth phases were set out for the planning, preparation, and creation of teaching and learning materials. The TLM products were tested and implemented in the fifth and final phase. Some of the difficulties encountered during project execution included financial issues, raw material supply issues, and time commitment and constraint issues. However, after the student teachers presented the teaching learning materials during Block teaching practise and school internship practise, the final outcome showed students’ attention and engagement in the lesson provided. The use of TLMs was observed to provide students with a ‘think, feel, relate’ experience, in which students obtained experiential learning through the TLMs provided.
